STEVE NASH DOUBLE FEATURE SPECIAL: 'DUE SOUTH'/'NASH BRIDGES (THE GAP)'

DUE SOUTH Feature.

Nasty Nash In The L.A. Area...About To Cause Mass Hysteria.

By TIM DAVID HARVEY

Oh Canada! This writer must start this article with an apology. As a man who loves happy endings and a Brit who once lived in Toronto I too thought that Steve Nash heading north to the Raptors would be the perfect way to end his career. Still, once it was announced that the greatest Canadian and Phoenix Sun ball player of all-time was heading to my beloved Los Angeles Lakers then it was a different story...this one.

Steve Nash-with all due respect to the great Gary Payton, Nick Van Exel and of course Derek Fisher-now gives the Los Angeles Lakers their greatest Point Guard since Magic Johnson. Even two years shy of his 40's the ever durable skater-boy keeps the Lakers rolling with a dynamic duo in their backcourt alongside Kobe Bryant. 'Kash' are about to rule everything around them. Especially if this is the Mitch Kupchak move that finally lures Dwight Howard from his Disneyworld to Hollywood. You could ring these changes.

The former back to back MVP and general of the floor is the lucky break the Lakers need. Even if he won't be able to wear his infamous number 13 jersey due to the retirement of Wilt's. Still Nash's Canadian number 7 could come into play, (hey Lamar Odom's (whose trade exemption actually helped this deal along, guess the Lakers did get something for him after all) not going to need it back, heading for the wrong side of STAPLES like Chris Paul) especially if his arrival unfortunately means the departure of the great, rising Ramon Sessions. Kobe's 24/Sessions may be over. But 24/7 could still keep running the floor day in and day out.

Sure Kobe once unleashed one of his nastiest dunks on Nash but this fellow class of '96 legend has got nothing but love for Steve from the All-Star alliances to their postseason wars. Kobe recognizes Nash's shot as one of the best in the NBA and we all know about this guys passing. Now if Kobe can work the give and go you may have one of the best backcourts basketball has ever seen. No matter how little or long it lasts.

Kobe Bryant made the call and Steve Nash answered it. The first Canadian to don purple and gold since Rick Fox could bring the purple confetti and gold championship dynasty days that Rick acted in back to the Lakers legacy script. The Lakers have fallen into mid-playoff exit purgatory these past two seasons and Steve knows this losing all too well. Steve's Phoenix teams of years gone by where a first-round playoff bogey team on Kobe's post-Shaq Laker playoff pretenders. Now together Nash bridges the gap between success and failure. Heading due south from the idea of returning to his native Canada this man looks to make a point in taking the Lakers higher. Get ready to thank him kindly.

Even with his youth, knees and back against him Steve Nash would sooner suffer a broken nose than a defeat. Just ask San Antonio or Robert Horry. This guy is a big-time playoff performer. A clutch hitter ready to touch base with one of the greatest postseason teams in NBA history. Whether he becomes the perfect mentor to tutor the developing dynamics of torch receiving Ramon Sessions or not. Whether he finds Gasol and Bynum or Howard in the paint, Nash is now a part of Kobe Bryant and Los Angeles Lakers legacy. The final chapter of his NBA career looks to be a real page turner. Get ready to witness history. Amazing is about to happen once again.

NASH BRIDGES (THE GAP) Feature.

Point proven.

BY TIM DAVID HARVEY

Superstars come and go in this league. Most make their mark but some fall by the courtside. There are legends and then there are legends of the fall. Sometimes hype becomes humiliation. Sometimes great expectations become 'quantities of debt', word to Charles Dickens. Number one picks sometimes become zero's and starters become 'did not play-coaches decision'. Sometimes being the first one to enter the gym becomes being the last one to leave the club. Throughout all this however-even with the Hollywood hype that comes with a Laker move to Los Angeles-Steve Nash remains Steve Nash.

This Summer for the 2012 Olympics in London all the talented Basketball nations of the world will duke it out (What's up Coach K?) for those once in a four year, career lifetime gold medals. Whether it is the old glory of the USA, the samba of Brazil, or 'dos celebraciĆ³n' for Spain (nice World Cup/Euro win this year) one thing will remain the same. The greatest Canadian player of all-time will be watching, waiting and working. Still on his grind at 36 years old. Still in the gym 14 years deep. Still the last one out.

This year the news in the NBA will be dominated somewhat by bad press and scandal. Referees may blow the whistle on certain allegations, books may be written. Players may brawl on court and some team-mates may take it to the locker rooms, but as some players bring it to pistols the only thing one player will be shooting is the lights out. Passing like the second coming of Pete Maravich. As other guys try and look macho behind some b.s. behavior one number 10 will top them all, making shot's that doubters didn't think he had in his arsenal (fellow soccer fan Kobe knows how he shoots and scores). Unlucky for some the former number 13 aint playing...figuratively speaking.

The league may have been locked out this season gone and close to being cancelled like most American television dramas but don't lie to me. You know Steve Nash still locked it down on the court (when allowed), defensively, offensively and anything in-between and required. Some big egos will carry a chip on their shoulder but through all this one thing will remain constant. Once financial business was settled and we got back down to basketball business Steve Nash carried nothing but his entire team on his skinny frame, 1 through 15. No chip on his shoulder, no heavy heart. A free mind like his freewheeling Dylan style. No grudge, just a match. Believe that.

There will be draft picks making their mark in this league, players breaking out and superstars becoming celebrities. Players will have off nights and career nights. Throughout all this though Steve Nash will give his all. 100% for 82 plus (24 and 48 too). When others become MVP's, the former back to back 'Most Valuable' will play like this when critics are watching someone else, like the guy next to him in the backcourt. All whilst this team leader will graciously pass off the ball and the glory to someone else too. Whether they be named Kobe, Metta, Pau, Andrew or Dwight.

When others go cold Steve will heat up on his teams request taking the scoring load if needed. When other players in this league have 'Player of the Night' games and reap all the glory Steve Nash will stay on defense and guard that best player. Taking the hits, taking the buckets and taking the loss if need be, because that's the seeds a dedicated worker must sow. You've got to take the good with the bad. You have to be there, not only in the happy times but the sad ones as well. A true professional gives his all on either side of a blow-out whereas a bust just blows hot and cold. Highlight of the week players may make ESPN and flavor of the month players may make it on to some kid’s wall. Steve Nash however will make the Hall. The lane is clear for him...there's already a street in L.A. bearing his name.

Teams will make the playoffs and teams will take lottery tickets. Teams will make the finals and teams will go fish like Derek making or missing in the clutch. There will be a champion and there will be a first loser. Throughout all this Steve Nash will take the Lakers back to the golden days. Steve will remain hot in California even if things on the floor get cold. First round, second round or more Nash will leave it all on the floor. Sweat soaked, Gatorade drunk, legs tired and ankles gone. He'll give his all. Even if his nose is bust by a San Antonio Spur. Even if a 'Where Amazing Happens' border becomes 'Where getting checked hard happens'. Even if he gets knocked down Steve will get back up. Down and blown out it won't be over for Steve until the final buzzer sings. A loss won't be a loss for Nash until it's recorded in the box score. Other plays may have a different opinion; these other players merely give in so give it up for Steve Nash.

Give it up for a guy who keeps it 100 when others are thinking 99.999. Give it up for a guy that may look like a surfer but is all ball like a Kobe Bryant foul at STAPLES. A skater boy that says "see you later boys" to the competition, making fellow Canadians proud like Avril, while opponents look for the Advil. Yeah sure this is a headache, but he's the remedy. Sure there are more who play like him, but there's no one quite like Steve Nash in this league. Sure others may dunk while he lays it in, and others may take all the glory while he hustles but name another player who works as hard as Steve does? At his age, at his position and with all the abuse he takes and has taken Steve still has nothing but love and dedication for this league.

Next season some players will make magazine covers, highlight reels, YouTube footage, tweets and forum posts and then tomorrow who knows. This is the life for certain celebrities or stars, or most 'baller's and 'demigods'. Throughout all this however one thing again will remain the same. Nasty Nash will be in your area, about to cause mass hysteria because Steve Nash bridges the gap and it 'aint hard to tell. Just look at the ESPY's red carpet. Just ask Nas.

Life is good.

ANTAWN JAMISON-POWERING THE LAKERS FORWARD

Going Fourth.

By TIM DAVID HARVEY

Be advised. Antawn Jamison is not the superstar you think he is. He isn't even as young as you remember. Be warned he's not our savior, not our Kobe, not our Steve Nash big Summer signing. Still you best believe he Antawn is the one piece that helps this Lakers puzzle fit. Believe this former All-Star is all-team. Believe this player with plenty of years left in reserve is the best bench player this Lakers organization has had-bar fellow former 'Sixth Man Of The Year' Lamar Odom-in years...no decades.

A smooth like Jaamal Wilkes Small Forward with Power Forward tweening size. A twine thwacker from distance. Able to hit from deep with the inside knowledge that has regularly made him one rebound shade under a 20 and 10 threat (a big man who's recorded grand career highs of 51 and 23 a couple of times). The man who's birth certificate was meant to read 'Antwan' is distinct in his own right and no mistake signing. Antawn in a keeper. A forward as classic as his Nike trainer middle-namesake, Cortez is a killer. This former warrior for Golden State has been a Californian king before as an All-Star, but since then his great play for good teams has left him the quietest, consummate professional of stars. Just ask Dallas or Washington. Now in the bright lights of the Hollywood La, La Laker land this silent killers action-thriller game will be exposed to this movie towns highlight reels.

Beyond the throwback forward style, the smooth as Irish whiskey Jamison brings substance to the Lakers new balanced measure. He's played with new signing Nash before in Dallas and the Maverick catalyst of this revamped Laker team that has avoided the wrecking ball swing of rebuilding has really started something. Jamison is another big name that could help draw more familiar faces to STAPLES and we're not just talking about the celebrity laden crowds. Sure the best recruiter in the league right now wears a championship ring with LeBron James engraved in it, but as Miami's leading man channels his inner Danny Ocean-putting a 'big five' team together with Ray Allen and Rashard Lewis-Jamison and Nash are drawing that star power and pull too.

If that doesn't sound like your particular brand of championship champagne, help yourself to as many other teams as you like and have a safe road trip. No hard feelings. Otherwise, come with the Lakers on their highly lucrative championship champagne campaign. Because Jamison's put it on the line with LeBron before too in Cleveland (where his Cavs time also saw him coached by Lakers head Mike Brown) surely this may count for something in terms of advantage in this chess move offseason side game of the NBA. Ant' has played alongside LeBron in gamed and against him in practice. You can count on 'tawn knowing 'Bron's every move. This may not be a straight checkmate, but a knight could take a king in this game. Jamison without James carried Cleveland like a true star Cavalier too. Will Jamison be the one with the knowledge of the South Beach talents able to take the championship shine from Miami and back to California?

Sure the Lakers miss Lamar Odom like they miss Derek Fisher. They where and always will be family. Still just like Nash's arrival has helped the Fisher hurt Jamison's one will ease the Odom pain. Antawn these days may not be better but in terms of experience he's an upgrade from L.O. Antawn Jamison could be the best, most influential former star, role playing bench player since fellow number four Ron Harper. This fourth selection in the '98 draft really supports the big five of Kobe, Pau, Nash, Bynum and Metta World Peace perfectly. The Lakers could really go forth with their new sixth man for this year. Just how far will be determined over the next 82 and hopefully more.

THE BASKETBALL DIARIES: TEAM USA @ TEAM GB, MANCHESTER, ENGLAND

Northern Soul

By TIM DAVID HARVEY

The USA and Great Britain are normally allies, but last week as the English city of Manchester prepared London for the Olympics the two became foes over two friendlies. The city that gave us Northern Soul and Manchester Untied held an exhibition last week as the Team USA Olympic men and women's basketball teams came into town to play Team GB the hosts of this years Olympic games ahead of their plans to hold an NBA Europe Live game next year. With some entries from 'The Basketball Diaries' let's recap.

Wednesday 18Th July, 2012.

The stage is set and this is a banner moment for the city. 'Welcome To Basketball History In Manchester' a billboard next to the worlds famous Manchester Arena (formerly the M.E.N.) proudly proclaims. The men will tip-off a day later but now is time for the women to show just how great they are. It's almost a disrespectful shame that with the cheapest men's seats coming out at around 50 English pounds that you can see the woman play for around 6, still my upgraded seats don't seem to mind.

Plus the stars of the WNBA and British Basketball show they are worth more a year after the Atlanta Dream came to Manchester to wake up women's basketball with Team GB. Now the greatest female basketball talent ever-aside from Lisa Leslie-is on full display (even if top shooter and point Sue Bird is unfortunately MIA) and it all looks so good. Great Britain almost looked to pull of a shocker too coming out of the gates early and proud, leading the way and setting the tone thanks to players like Dominique Allen, Kim Butler and Jo Leedham. No one played harder than quick and tenacious guard Stef Collins who should treat this game like her audition to the big leagues of the WNBA.

Still not even the cool, rock star entrance of the Team USA (and GB) men's team courtside and a halftime show from pop princess Alexander Burke could distract the action from the women's Team USA for long. With more pace, power and perfection the eclectic star mix of Candace Parker, Angel McCoughtry and the legendary Tamika Catchings and Diana Taurasi sweetly broke GB down. The hosts let the game run away from them but an 88-63 win was testament to just how good the U.S are not how hard GB worked, because they earned more than that. Next, great WNBA star Maya Moore took 'Player Of The Game' honors with an MVP performance and as much points as years to her name (21). All in all this game did more than whet our appetite for the men's showdown a day later, it also showed us just how much of a wealth and expanse of basketball talent their really is.

Thursday 19Th July, 2012.

As good as the women's game was it's clear from all the assorted basketball jerseys in the city of Manchester that the men's game is the big draw. Queues of Kobe's, LeBron's and Durant's make the usual expansive ground outside the Manchester Arena look like a cattle-farm. Their will be no upgraded seats tonight. Everyone wants to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars. Even this writer by a day a night back kick-yourself inducing missed Kobe Bryant and LeBron James in a bar in up-market Spinningfields. Still it was all set for this round. Chicago Bulls and NBA star Luol Deng has been the proud and exalted flag bearer for British basketball for many hard-fought and banner years. Now with new Portland Trail Blazers signing Joel Freeland, dynamo Pops Mensah-Bonsu, Eric Boateng and captain Andrew Sullivan he looks to lead a joyful, exclamation making upset against a U.S. team.

A U.S. team that features the top today and possibly all-time trio of Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Kevin Durant for starters. Deron Williams and Chris Paul have a point too. As do the great Carmelo Anthony, Russell Westbrook and Andre Igudola. Not to mention Tyson Chandler and Kevin Love, or 'Sixth Man Of The Year' James Harden and top rookie draft pick Anthony Davis. It all seems like a dream team. Shades of '92 with Chris Mullin a cut above the rest sitting courtside. Even during practice they look to strong. Westbrook leading a dunking line and jumping into the shoulders of fellow UCLA grad Kevin Love (could some Oklahmoa City thunderous, new big-three coaxing be going on?) Who is nailing almost every practice three he takes, only to bounce off his training defender to get warm and pure again once his shot doesn't fall. One word repeated twice for Team GB comes to mind; "oh, oh".

In the game it's the same and all EA; 'Electronic Arts'. It just seems like a video game, dunks, dukes and dynamic dominance. Kobe may only record 5 points in this one to a crowd that may have wanted to see more, but he formidably fakes and hits a capital, career exclaiming J that all looks just too good. Anthony, James, Igudola and Durant are making the basket look like waste-paper, while Brooklyn's Deron Williams is setting all this up on the table perfectly with an MVP performance. Still it's the pocket rocket dunking dynamics of the heating up Russell Westbrook and the dunks and blocks of Anthony Davis that really draw the crowd. A star sometimes lost amongst others Westbrook proves he's right up there and deserving of the 'Commemorative Programme' cover in replacement of injured star Derrick Rose. While Kentucky Final Four winner and New Orleans selection Davis showed he wasn't shy on the worlds biggest stage. He's no rookie no more.

The U.S. ended up winning by for...ty, 118-78 but that didn't mean Great Britain didn't play valiantly. Score aside-just like the women's team-the men played with heart in the soul of their football loving city and country. From Pop's popping dunks, to Luol Deng leading the charge of a team strong 1 through 12 there was more British talent on stage tonight than the great halftime performance of Tinie Tempah chasing rapper Labrinth. Team GB really expressed themselves and even if they didn't provide the exclamation they wanted they made a point to punctuate this forthcoming Olympics. They have the talent and will not go quietly into the night. This was just a series of exhibitions-albeit some hard-fought, thrilling ones-the real contests start to end this week and start the next. Let the real games begin.

TEAM USA OLYMPIC WEEK-THE AMERICAN DREAM

What are dreams made of?

By TIM DAVID HARVEY

Dreams are made from aspirations and desires. Dreams start in the playgrounds, are cultivated in college and grow on the court. Dreams start in America and carry on through the world. Dreams are World Championships. Dreams are Olympic Gold medals. Dreams are carried by 12 men 18 years ago. Dreams are made true in Barcelona. Dreams are real.

What are dreams made of?

Dreams are activating NBA players for the first time. Dreams are remembering Chuck Daly, Rest in Peace. Dreams are one of the greatest teams every created in world sports history. Dreams come from the help of NBA legends, Lenny Wilkens, P.J. Carlesimo and Mike Krzyzewski. Dreams come when you almost beat your opponents by an average of 44 points.

What are dreams made of?

Dreams begin with Angola and end with Croatia. Dreams are witnessed by global fanfare. Dreams are that potent. Dreams come in sound bites. Dreams seem unreal, ‘Like Elvis of ‘The Beatles’’ walked into the room. We hear you Chuck!

What are dreams made of?

Dreams are Christian Laettner, fresh out of Duke University showing us all the versatile talent that this big man adopts.

What are dreams made of?

Dreams are admiral’s making port. Dreams are David Robinson holding it down on the court.

What are dreams made of?

Dreams are Patrick Ewing owning the paint. Rebounding, dunking and sweet stroking, with his Number 6 uniform soaking.

What are dreams made of?

Dreams are Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen, teammates and brothers on two squads. Chi-towns finest. Batman and Robin. Dreams are dunking on everybody with your tongue out. Dreams are taking on everybody, point to pivot.

What are dreams made of?

Dreams are two more teammates and brothers pick and rolling for their country. Dreams come from the country and wear short, shorts. Dreams are Karl Malone and John Stockton. A one, two punch nobody wants’ to face.

What are dreams made of?

Dreams ‘Glyde’ like Clyde, Drexler to be exact. Dreams glide through the lane and finish at the hoop, ferocious and beautiful all at the same time.

What are dreams made of?

Dreams come with a buzz cut, don’t look like your average but play like a savage. Dreams come in threes. Dreams shoot the lights out. Dreams are Chris Mullin.

What are dreams made of?

Dreams come from an MVP amongst legends. Dreams ‘round’ into shape. Dreams take every rebound and ball. Dreams drop 18 points per on a team where the ball is shared. Dreams are funny, charming but serious all at the same time. Dreams ‘Let em have it Chuck’. Dreams are Charles Barkley.

What are dreams made of?

Dreams are two former friends and foes coming together for one common goal. Dreams are about to pass the torch after going out with a shooting bang. Dreams are two guys that helped redefine the league and sport as a whole. Dreams are two guys who brought the sport around the globe and are now making it their own. Dreams are things of Magic. Dreams are things of Legend. Dreams are Magic Johnson and Larry Bird.

What are dreams made of?

Dreams are made of this. Dreams are made to witness. Dreams are enshrined last weekend. Dreams are poetry in motion. This dream however is summed up better by Magic’s devotion.

Dreams are golden. Dreams are real.

FRESH OUT THE BOX: FOOT LOCKER-HOUSE OF HOOPS, London, England.

'Fresh Out The Box' is a new feature that looks at kicks, clothing, shops and everything accessorizing to Basketball.

Who says the city of London, England knows nothing about the sport of Basketball? Luol Deng, one of the Chicago Bulls and the NBA's best players was raised here, while the city hosts an official NBA game a year. This town has even built an incredible bball stadium for this years 2012 Olympic Games. Still when this Lemon Meringue like arena is torn down by pitch forks and what not after closing ceremony other peach and basket traditions will still stand in London.

One being the House Of Hoops tucked underneath Bond Street's Foot Locker. Lace up your sneaks because this place isn't too far a walk from the big top attraction of London that is Oxford Circus. This place is definitely worth a look and shop for hoop heads. There aren't too many of these exclusive Nike temple, 'House Of Hoops' (Paris, Barcelona and America hold a few) and there aren't too many as good as this. Upstairs in this big Foot Locker is plenty of great things, even some of those NBA jersey's that are cheaper but less authentic than your swingman favourites. Still it's down the escalator where court is held.

For Basketball fans it may as well be a stairway to heaven as this underground, exclusive homage to hoops is a haven for all purists away from the Football and other sports not Basketball dominated U.K. Scene. Decked out in mahogany like a Eric B. & Rakim or Fugees classic this place really is a hardwood classic with all the latest and greatest trainers, T-shirts and other apparel that is current and collectible from Kobe tee's to the new LeBron's.

It's all here and known by the friendly staff that are as polite as they are in the game like EA. This coolly lit place even has some great dƩcor in the form of murals of the greats from Kobe to M.J. It all just looks so right and everyone's been here. Snoop Dogg, LeBron, Deron, even Ashton Kutcher...excuse me Kyle Korver. Now if it's good enough for them, it's certainly the place to be. In the game and in the house in the name of hoops, Foot Locker's sister store has it on lock. TIM DAVID HARVEY.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK…HERE WE COME!

No Sleep Till Brooklyn Reign.

By QUETT WALKER

If you have been paying close attention to any NBA news for the last couple of weeks, all the rave has been about teams trying to better themselves for the upcoming season. First it was the NBA draft, where the biggest and brightest players coming out of college have decided to embark upon their journey into the professional basketball league that is the NBA. Now that the draft has come and gone, teams are now focusing on all the free agents that have been available to negotiate as of midnight on July 1.

The biggest team in the free agent hunt is definitely the Nets. After having spent 35 years in New Jersey, the franchise is due to start it tenure in its brand new stadium in the city of Brooklyn, New York. One of the biggest concerns that was presented with the Nets a few weeks ago was the fact they would be moving into a brand new stadium in the Mecca of basketball that is the state of New York without any big names on its roster. They knew how important it was to try and resign their all-star point guard Deron Williams to a new contract but this wasn’t going to happen until they could guarantee Williams that the team could attract and sign other big names. The Nets have actually did just that so far by recently acquiring 6 time all-star Joe Johnson in a trade with the Atlanta Hawks and resigning solid role player Gerald Wallace as well. These moves have definitely triggered Williams to resign with the Nets a couple of days ago with hopes of obtaining further players, but we all know which player the Nets really want to sign.

It’s no secret that the Nets have been trying to court Dwight Howard into signing with them since the start of last season which has cause a disruptive presence on the Orlando Magic franchise where Howard currently plays. Much speculation surrounded the Magic since Howard never signed an extension to stay with Orlando beyond the 2012-2013 season. This caused whispers around the league that Howard was tired of playing on a team that has steadily declined in their performance since reaching the finals in 2009 against the Lakers. After facing two first round exits in the last two years and failure to surround Dwight with talent that can take the team to the next level once again, it is totally understandable the frustration that he is facing. This is clearly evident and management has shown an attempt to convince Dwight to stay by fulfilling his request to have his coach Stan Van Gundy fired and they have even persuaded General Manager Otis Smith to resign. Orlando hopes by doing this it is showing Howard that they take his concerns seriously and want to move in a new direction since the old one hasn’t clearly worked for a while. However Orlando have taken a big gamble in shaking up the coach and the front office if Dwight doesn’t decide to resign beyond next season.

What the Nets are attempting to do is to simply follow a trend that has emerged in the NBA a long time ago where a team would attempt to have more than one all-star or super star player present on its roster. A lot of individuals are blaming Lebron James when he chose to sign with the Miami Heat in 2010 as they already had 2 of the top 20 players in the league, being Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. They claim that this has upset the equilibrium of the NBA whereas only a handful of teams in the league would possess most of the NBA’s best players, thus creating an imbalance by placing teams without all-stars and superstars on the lower end of the spectrum. It seems as these same individuals have forgotten what happened in 1996 when Charles Barkley joined the Rockets to play alongside Clyde Drexler and Hakeem Olajuwon or in 1999 when Portland put together its super team with Steve Smith, Scottie Pippen etc. However my favourite one is when Karl Malone and Gary Payton went to the Lakers to join forces with Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant in 2004. In addition, Steve Nash has JUST recently agreed to sign with the Lakers to team up with a volatile Metta World Peace, an aging Kobe Bryant and frontcourt of Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum.

This just proves the point that the Nets are not the only one in pursuit of creating a super team. This trend is something that is going to continue to happen and there is no stopping it as players, owners, and GMs are putting more focus on winning a championship now and not just playing for the love of the game anymore.

The Nets’ mission is a very clear one. They want to launch themselves into the upper echelon of the Eastern conference to challenge teams like the Bulls and Heat and perhaps replicate a trip to the NBA Finals like they did back in 2002 & 2003 and what better stage to do it on than the media centre that is New York. As their Russian owner Mikhail Prokhorov has indicated, money is no object and he has even guaranteed the franchise a championship by 2015. By the looks of the off season activity so far, he seems to be on his way to keeping that promise if he can pull of the Dwight Howard signing.

Let’s just hope they can achieve this without breaking the bank while attempting to provide a high level of basketball in the city with the most loyal, toughest and most cynical fans of the sport of basketball, The Big Apple.

A TALE OF TWO CITIES

A storybook ending & beginning.

By TIM DAVID HARVEY

The NBA loves nostalgia and a great story. Hey, we all do. That's why it was so great for Laker fans to see Derek Fisher suit back up for the second time in Lakers purple back in 2009 to end up shooting down teams in the championship clutch to win it all like he did three rings earlier. That's why it hurt in Hollywood when he was sent by the Buss family on a coach to Oklahoma. That's why Canadian fans where yearning for Steve Nash to finish his career with the Raptors in Toronto before he signed up to script his last chapter in L.A. with the Lakers. I guess it's true what they say: what goes around comes around.

There are similar, familiar feelings right now between the New York Knicks and the Houston Rockets this offseason. If the new, New York Knicks needed any post-playoff, fire hydrant beating hope then it surely comes with their latest signing. Sure the Ama're/Carmelo future looks bright for the white, blue and orange but it's the return of their post-Ewing, pivot man that really inks their redemption.

New York, your Marcus Camby is back in the Empire State's Madison Square Garden. Let's hear it for him.

Back in the early 2000's-after the sweat boys mopped up the last of Patrick Ewing's leave it all on the floor career-the future was the Kandy man, Camby. Now after mining some success for the Nuggets in Denver with Carmelo Anthony the former 'Defensive Player Of The Year' is on guard back in the core of the Big Apple. Not only are Camby and Carmelo reunited they are also aligned with Chandler and Ama're Stoudemire to add stat's and a formidable foundation to Manhattan's frontline. With the unstoppable, un-toppable, worldwide buzz, hype and potential of Jeremy Lin adding to the J.R. Smith, Baron Davis 'Knicks tape' featuring even more artists it all sounds so good in New York City for 2012 like Springsteen, Norah Jones, Lana Del Ray and Nas releasing albums in the same year.

This is-however-if the Knicks match the Houston Rockets offer sheet for Lin. N.Y. have reportedly been quoted to be willing to match any offer for the free-agent Jeremy up to a billion dollars, but all this Linsanity hasn't resulted in any Dr. Evil pinky fingers to the mouth yet. Let's put it this way, beyond basketball all the money, exposure and buzz for new york basketball right now comes with Lin. it's in the teams best business interest. Still, beyond the superficial of this is the substance Lin would bring the Knicks, giving this contender the inside and out team that could really drive from an outside championship threat to one that could be painted in history.

Still with just one stroke of a pen that could all be changed. Carmelo, Denver and New York know this LeBron and maybe Dwight Howard feeling all too well. If Houston avenge losing Camby by gaining Lin then it'll really be a problem for New York. Houston we really have something here. the Knick loss could and would be the Rockets soaring financial and popular cultural gain. This ballclub miss the gaping literal and inspired hole that Yao Ming left and the worldwide buzz and excitement he brought this team-especially in Asia-will definitely be replaced by Lin who is arguably the biggest cultural inspiring NBA force in this leagues status around the world since Yao.

The jersey's, popularity and relationships are already set in contract, but will Lin seal the deal? Beyond the Linsane celebrity buzz and love, Lin's heart and soul devotion to the game will translate in statistical success that goes beyond television ratings, but will this box-score favorite be on the tubes in Houston and out of New York and all those corner stalls and shops that carry his name and merchandise?

Only time and called bluffs will tell in this chess moving game that is the NBA Summer. It's going to be a hot one. Either way there are a lot of fond, familiar feelings running through the cities of new York and Houston for the Knick and Rocket ballclubs respectively. Still whether the story will result in a happy ending for New York or Houston all depends on Lin's next chapter. It'll all be written with the turning of a contract. Now the question is where will the ink dry? There's nothing like a good NBA story. The game is to be told...

LEBRON JAMES-THIRD TIMES A CHARM

Once, twice, three times a champion.

By QUETT WALKER

As Lebron James lifts the Larry O’Brien trophy, the decibels on the hate o’ meter have fallen flatter than the sales of Joe Budden’s first album. All of the Miami Heat fans can be heard cheering throughout the American Airlines Arena for their team, who have won their second championship (first in 2006) since the franchise was formed in 1989. Lebron James was spectacular not only in Game 5 notching a triple double with 26 points, 11 Rebounds and 13 assists, but has been balling throughout the Finals averaging 28.6 points, 10.2 rebounds and 7.4 assists while playing an amazing 44 out of a possible 48 minutes a game. It was a no brainer that if (or when?) the Heat won the Finals, James would be the Finals MVP.

James has managed to achieve this with a lacklustre performance from the Miami bench (with the exclusion of Shane Battier who has been lighting it up in the Finals and oh yeah Mike Miller in Game 5), an ailing Chris Bosh and more nonchalant and less aggressive than usual Dwayne Wade.

The Miami Heat have performed what my friends and I called a ‘backway’ sweep in which a team wins 4 straight games after being down in a seven game series, essentially ‘sweeping’ the team to win the series. The Thunder were victims of this after they had similarly done the same to the San Antonio Spurs in the previous round. Kevin Durant and his teammates made their first Finals appearance playing against the Heat and they will most likely learn from this experience. They have some big decisions to make as to whether to resign James Harden and Serge Ibaka.

Although after getting his first chip, the haters are still going to continue their endless search to find things to nit-pick on rather than share in this momentous occasion where Lebron has started his journey to somewhat earn the title of ‘King James’. Everything from the fact that he left the Cleveland Cavaliers franchise to run to Miami to team up with D Wade as ‘he couldn’t do it by himself’, to the nationally televised ‘Decision’, to the Miami Heat media session where Wade, James and Bosh danced around on stage with James proclaiming that there are going to deliver not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6 not 7 championships.

We all make mistakes. No one can propose the argument to me that Lebron James is the first and only basketball player to make a mistake. Do I have to refer everyone to Michael Jordan’s gambling addiction or Kobe Bryant’s rape trial during 2003 - 2004 season? Ok I won’t go there.

Anyway this begs the question, why does Lebron James have so many haters?

I must admit I have been guilty of this in the past and anyone who knows me is familiar with my lack of fondness (that’s putting it nicely) for the Los Angeles Lakers, especially during the Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal dynasty era. Yes they were cocky and they had earned the right to be as they were 2 of the 7 superstars in the NBA at the time on the same team and they were just that good! So I ask myself why hate on them? That is when I entered into another dimension and realised that although they may not have been my favourite players and I didn’t have to like them, I wouldn’t be a true basketball fan if I didn’t respect them and I wasn’t appreciative of their talent and skill. A lot of the haters fail to grasp this concept and thus propagate hate just for hate’s sake.

This is extremely evident in the comparison of Kobe Bryant and Lebron James which has been going on since the age of time. Who exactly is the best player out of the two? I bet you can guess what the haters will say. Kobe Bryant has definitely won more accolades such as championship rings (5 to be exact) than Lebron James but James has won more season MVPs (3 to Kobe’s 1). Although Bryant has been in the league longer (7 years longer) it only took him his first 4 years in league before he won his first title. People fail to realise that he was playing alongside the most dominant player in the NBA at the time in Shaquille O’Neil who often demanded the attention of double and sometimes triple teams from the opposing team. This often allowed Kobe (who was an unstoppable force at the time anyway) to dominate games from time to time which definitely heavily contributed to the 3 rings he won with Shaq.

After 7 long years in Cleveland, Lebron went to Miami to team up with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. This is the first time that Lebron James has played with someone who could create shots for themselves and take over games thus taking some of the pressure off of him. No one in history has won a NBA championship by themselves and is clearly demonstrated over the last few decades with duos such as Michael Jordan & Scottie Pippen, Kobe Bryant & Shaquille O’Neil, Hakeem Olajuwon & Clyde Drexler and in some instances trios such as, Tony Parker/Manu Ginobili/Tim Duncan, Paul Pierce/Kevin Garnett/Ray Allen and Kobe Bryant/Pau Gasol/Andrew Bynum. Lebron’s decision to flee to the Magic city in the sunshine state has resulted in 2 straight Finals appearances.

Kobe Bryant has been to the Finals 7 times yielding a 5 - 2 record while Lebron’s record is 1 –2. A lot of individuals are commenting that it took James’ third Finals appearance before he won the coveted NBA title. People often forget the great Jerry “Mr. Clutch” West, whose silhouette currently serves as the NBA logo, lost in the Finals 7 times before finally gaining his first and only championship on his 8th appearance.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not a Miami Heat fan nor do I think that James is a better play than Kobe Bryant at this point in time, but I acknowledge that he is very close and I appreciate his talent and recognise him as great basketball player. All of the haters need to realise that although James has not achieved the same level of success as Kobe, this by no sense means he’s that much of an inferior player. I am just sick and tired of everyone dismissing his superb talent, his amazing basketball ability and strong work ethic simply because he hasn’t won numerous championships - yet. These same people fail to acknowledge how great he is and therefore lose respect and cannot be deemed as true basketball fans in the eyes of the esteemed players, coaches, executives, writers, analysts and the true basketball fans of the NBA.

We all know winning is contagious and even though they always say the first one is the sweetest, we will enjoy the ride to see if Lebron can fulfil his promise to win not 1, not 2, not 3, not 4, not 5, not 6 not 7 championships.

STEVE NASH-DUE SOUTH

SOUL & BASKETBALL-An Interview With Walt McCarty

Got Game.

By TIM DAVID HARVEY

Let's take it back to 2006. This writer was 21. A postgraduate traveling on a year out between Toronto, Canada and Los Angeles. A lifelong Laker fan from England was finally about to see his favorite basketball team play against the Clippers at STAPLES. That was until he got stranded at LAX after his bags where lost. Hours later, through blurred, tired eyes a 6' 10 figure emerged, perhaps I was going to see a basketball player after all?

The man came through and was greeted with reciprocated well-wishes. Signing baseball caps and shaking hands, it was all love and respect. After talking with this player about his career in basketball and his new one in music (he had a keyboard under his arm) the evening turned out to not be a disappointment after all. It ended up working out for the better. Thanks to Walt McCarty.

Walt McCarty the basketball star that turned out to be more than just your average player. A Kentucky Wildcat legend and champion in 1996 before Anthony Davis. His three-pointer, nailing UK's 31 point, history making comeback over LSU. A team that featured league greats like Antoine Walker, Tony Delk, Mark Pope, Ron Mercer and Derek Anderson coached by Rick Pitino and Jim O'Brien. A guy that was more than a journeyman. A 19th Draft pick in the classic Kobe/Iverson/Nash 1996 class that took it higher with the New York Knick, Boston Celtic, Phoenix Sun and Los Angeles Clipper teams that selected him.

A Power Forward that hustled hard that moved like a guard. A defensive stopper who could also get it going on the offensive end. An off-the bench microwave player that could really light it up from downtown, whether clutch prime-time or garbage pine-time. Far from the zero on his jersey. 'I love Walter' Hall of Famer Tommy Heinsohn would exclaim after plays. And so did everybody else. Far from a poor man's Robert Horry this spark-plug star was worth every multi-contract and a household name in his own right.

Now you can expect his name to get even bigger. The man who once acted in Spike Lee's 'He Got Game' alongside Denzel Washington and current Boston star Ray Allen has more than a second career after basketball and we're not talking about an assistant coaching gig. This man has got something more in concert. This man can really sing and we're not just talking about his Jerry Stackhouse-esque National Anthem chorus. His great, debut R&B album 'Moment For Love' was more than a Shaq side or Iverson one off. Like Kareem Rush, Walt proved he can really be a real R&B star. Just ask Tank or any of the serious soul-men that follow him. With the great single 'Emotionally' heating up like his play off the bench and his new album 'Unbreakable' set to buzz before the fourth quarter this man really is a star in two games.

Want to hear more?

Q. Walt, thank you for your time. How you doing man?

-I'm well man just trying to keep busy. No complaints.

Q. When I met you in 2006, keyboard in hand I knew you where on to something. Loving 'Emotionally' how's the reception been for this single? Everything you hoped?

-Emotionally album is doing well. People were very accepting of it and their still buying so I appreciate the love so much.

Q. Tell us more about this 'Unbreakable' album?

-The UNBREAKABLE is my best work so far. It's more Urban Pop driven and really is a great piece of work and I'm truly excited how it all came together. I don't think people are gonna believe what they are about to witness so I'm just ecstatic and anxious all at the same time. grounds amazing project.

Q. Who are you working with and what artists are in touch with you about your second career?

-I worked with two very talented producers. Fred "Blaze The Champ" Crawford produced most of the record and Melvin "Saint Nick" Coleman also did some production as well. Bad Boy Entertainment artists Los and Def Jams Mickey Halstad both feature on the record as well as my close friend Rob Jackson.

Q. Who are your biggest R&B and soul influences? You remind me of Tank or Carl Thomas. Raised off the likes of Marvin and Donny surely?

-My biggest influences were The Jackson's, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Boyz 2 Men, Babyface and Brian McKnight.

Q. Some Basketball players seem to make great musicians. No one can doubt Shaq's skills. What do you think of Kareem Rush?

-I love the fact of athletes pursing their dreams away from the court as long as its a passion and not a gimmick. I haven't heard much of K Rush's music but I wish him all the success.

Q. Would you be open to collaborating with an NBA player like that? Not for gimmicks sake but to make real music.

-It all depends on the what we are doing. If its something that sounds great and connects I'm all for it.

Q. Top star Tank follows your music I remember seeing him and actor/musician (talk about a double threat) Jamie Foxx playing basketball at Tyrese's house. You could show these guys a thing or two right?

-haha I know those guys very well and really follow them too and excited about their new project. Your big time they follow your twitter account lol.

Q. Speaking of which we got to talk some basketball? As I ask this Steve Nash has just signed for the Lakers. Him and Kobe, your class of '96. What do you think of that and what a class?

-the 96 draft was a great class. I know Stevie very well and I wish him all the best. Tremendous person and great player. Lakers are back in it.

Q. That three-pointer and more makes you a Kentucky legend. Can you share with us some of your favorite memories from the college days and what it was like to reunite with some of your alumni in the pro's?

-Kentucky was a great experience. I have too many memories. What really stands out is how close we were and how much we care about each other as people and even to this day nothing has changed. It was awesome to see everyone fulfill their dreams. That's why we went to Kentucky.

Q. Can you share with us some of your favorite NBA memories? What a career you've had.

-My favorite memories are meeting all the guys I admired and aspired to be like on the court and go toe to toe with them.

Q. When we met I remember laughing and joking about the time your Celtic team destroyed the Philadelphia 76ers with a barrage of threes. I mean even Mark Bryant was hitting from deep. That's got to be one of your favorite memories right?

-Haha yes those games against the 76ers were Classic. I have been called the 76er killer plenty of times haha

Q. You should have won 'Sixth Man Of The Year'. Like a Robert Horry or Bobby Jackson you brought so much off the bench and started well. Can you share with us some of your attitudes and approaches to the game please?

-My approach to the game was just go have fun, play as hard as you can and what ever happens in the end I walk away proudly cause I have my all.

Q. What you think of the NBA these days? Who do you like?

-I love the Nba and all the young talent. This game never gets old man.

Q. How about R&B and music these days?

-I think R&B is getting back to good music. You know guys like Tank & Tyrese is getting it back to what it use to be and you gotta give those guys loads of credit.

Q. You're about to change the game again right?

-I hope so, I believe I got something special.

In closing Walt giveas us a gem of advice for this life..."Give without remembering, Take without forgetting......"

ANTHONY DAVIS-RAISED EYEBROWS

Go 'Cat Go.

By TIM DAVID HARVEY

Look what the draft blew in. Your new billboard number one. The pick of the litter. The right choice. Anthony Davis. He's cut down nets in college and now he's going to raise even more eyebrows in the big leagues. Fear and respect him. He's one. From riding Kentucky derby's to making it feel like Madi Gras in New Orleans this wildcat is about to take the sting out of the Hornets.

Tell us like it is commissioner: "With the first pick in the 2012 Draft the New Orleans Hornets select Anthony Davis from the University Of Kentucky".

Go 'Cat GO!

David Stern couldn't be happier. He's got the city of New Orleans best interests at heart and now their ballclub has found the new soul of their franchise. After losing their goldon boy Chris Paul to an escape to L.A.-even after surviving a nixing-this team have a kid who's got plenty of time to mature into one of the best big players in a league that is falling short of pivots. Tweening between Power Forward and Centre the Hornets now have a player in their nest that can anchor their franchise for more than the next decade. Along with Doc's son and the guard of the future; Austin Rivers N.O. have the right prescription for the new team for the new generation of NBA basketball. Success starts here...now. This is the future.

That's because Anthony Davis is more than a top ten pick. He's the top dog. Number one with a bulletin. With 5 of his Kentucky bredrin being drafted this year (Michael Kidd-Gilchrist coming just behind at number 2 for the Charlotte Bobcats) Davis and his alumni may leave their University with a past and a trophy but they also give the NBA a future and a legacy. Besides the ever proud of his boys Coach Cap' will find his new talent as he watches this years champions join John Wall and Rajon Rondo in the association of the best.

After leading UK with his record 186 blocks to a title in New Orleans this year Davis now gets the chance to take New Orleans teams as far as his 'Mr Fantastic' long arms can reach. With his eyebrow down and his wingspan up this guy-after gaining a few more years and pounds-could be one lean, mean blocking and dunking machine. Plus when the rest of his game fills out-like it already is-this guys going to have even more to serve up on the table.

This is just what you can expect from an All-American who was already raked up the ranks and trophies, winning numerous National Player of the Year awards to go with the Oscar Robertson Trophy, the Adolph Rupp Trophy, the Associated Press Player of the Year, the Naismith Award, the Sporting News Player of the Year and of course the John R. Wooden Award. That's some pretty exclusive company. Just wait until this NBA star goes beyond critical and hyped expectations. Just wait until he goes beyond acreditations. Then he'll be in a league of his own.

This "late-bloomer" is going to have more than a growth spurt. More than a classic college career. He's going to be more than the excitement of hype. More than a guy with the potential to raise banners and jerseys as well as eyebrows. More than just a t-shirt. More than just another kid with a kicks deal. More than just another cap and suit on a late June evening. More than a television highlight or a newspaper headline. Anthony Davis is going to make more then his Kentucky Univeristy and his native Chicago proud.

He's going to make it.
