THROUGH THE WIRE: NEWS (08/12/10)

This years free-agency period has caught many headlines to say the least but the potential free-agents of 2011 have also been making waves in the news. Of course there was talk of Chris Paul being unhappy in New Orleans and forming another potential 'super' team in New York and now Carmelo Anthony's participation in this plan is being rumored even more and more. The Denver Nuggets have a three year $65 million extension on the table for Melo but right now the only thing this contracts collecting is dust and coffee rings. CBS report that Anthony is exploring his options for playing at the Garden. Staying with the Denver Nuggets offers Carmelo financial security but playing for the Knickerbockers with Stoudemire and maybe CP3 gives Anthony a chance to counter Miami's big three. In a year will Melo stay true to the team he has been with since the beginning? Which 'coincidentally' changed it's team colours when they drafted him (Just like Cleveland did with LeBron). Or will he share more in common with Chris Paul then having a hot wife?

Jul 27, 2010 - El Segundo, CA, USA - MATT BARNES talks about becoming a Los Angeles Laker during a press conference at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo.

The Lakers may have successfully tamed Ron Artest but they may have some more problems with their newly acquired defensive specialist, Matt Barnes. Matt's already had history with Kobe Bryant and according to two fans at a recent Pro-Am game Matt slapped an assistant coach after a bad call. Barnes went all Dave Chappelle's Rick James after arguing with the coach. Barnes recognises that he lost his "composure" but stated that the coach "frustrated" him and that my friends is why Matt asked him, 'What did the five fingers say to the face'? The Lakers have two of the most feared and emphatic defenders in the L. This year things are gonna get real nasty. It's gonna be fun to watch.

In trade news the Toronto Raptors acquired Julian Wright for Marco Belinelli from the New Orleans Hornets. Forward Wright averaged 8.1 Points and 4.6 Rebounds last season. Guard Marco Belinelli averaged 7.1 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.3 assists last season up North in Toronto. Bryan Colangelo seems a lot happier than last week, stating that, “Julian is another young athletic player that will add depth at the small forward position.” Wright is a nice addition to the Raps but after losing Bosh there still a long way back from contending again. If Toronto don't make more decent moves over the following years the NBA may have to reconsider having it's only franchise in Canada. It's a good job the Toronto fans are among the best in the NBA but they deserve better right now.
