THROUGH THE WIRE: NEWS (09/07/10)

In Tuesday's Eight-Finals of the 2010 FIBA World Championships there was a South American thriller as the hoops powerhouse Argentina outlasted a talented, diverse Brazil side. The final score was 93-89 and with such a small margin Argentina head to the quarter finals while Brazil head to the airport. The Argentine side was paced by Houston Rockets forward Luis Scola's 37 points. This stat buster proves that even if Scola's a role player who does the dirty work in Texas in South America he's a legend and a top tier player. Luis had 10 of the final 12 points for Argentina who will play Lithuania (who beat China today) in the next round. Scola is not just dominating for Argentina he is also the FIBA tournaments leading scorer. He even has more points than last years NBA scoring champion Kevin Durant, maybe it's time the Rockets propelled him to a new role?



Unfortunately the injury and conditioning problems continue for former North Carolina standout and Charlotte Bobcat draftee Sean May. The talented forward who hasn't had much chance to show the NBA what he did in the NCAA has suffered another setback. The Tar Heel star has suffered a stress fracture to his left foot and with that the New Jersey Nets have released him. The Nets have waived Sean because they don't like the word 'May' in their vocabulary in particular Sean 'May' rehab from this foot injury in 4-8 weeks but Jersey don't see that as enough time for him to make the roster. We wish all the best in Sean Mays recovery and hope he latch's on to another squad soon.



In a deciding conference final game with 2.8 seconds to go in the 4th quarter the ball was whipped to the corner and in a green jersey, Bird sank the game decider. Sound familiar? Well it is except it wasn't Larry but Sue Bird, WNBA three point specialist. She iced the game and series for the Seattle Storm with the clutch trey as the sole remaining Seattle Basketball franchise thundered past the Phoenix Mercury in the WNBA Western Conference Finlas. This marks a double celebration for Seattle and their star Lauren Jackson who was named this seasons WNBA MVP for the third time in her illustrious career. The Storm will now play in the final facing the winner of the Eastern Conference Final Series between the New York Liberty and the Atlanta Dream. ATL lead the best of three series 1-0 and could wrap things up at home before the next 'Through The Wire' goes to press.
