Why he took that shot.
BY TIM DAVID HARVEY
Here's the tip.
Let me ask you a question? What was the most important shot of last season? That beautiful, buzzer beater that will prove timeless on both ESPN and YouTube? A cute crossover that turned into a terrific turnaround? Maybe it was a swish? A fade away? A Kobe? Perhaps one of those half a dozen or so game icers where the hottest shots of the year, but most important?
NAH!
The most important shot of last season was an awful, flat footed, Fred Flintstone clanger in the fading minutes of the 2010 Western Conference finals. The only way the most important shot of last season read on the stat sheet is when it rattled off the rim, planted a smacker on the glass and then was hugged by a rebounder.
One of the most pivotal scenes in last years NBA story came from one of its biggest characters. Now it may have looked like nothing, but it was one of those back against the wall, against the world moments were our hero has to dig for something deeper before they fall harder than Samuel L. Jackson and The Rock in 'The Other Guys'. Our guy in this picture however, our hero was Ron Artest.
It's the fourth quarter of Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Phoenix Suns and the sand in the hour glass is falling fast in this game before the series heads back to the Arizona desert. The Lakers are in play and Ron finds space to shoot a two, but he doesn't split that deuce. Instead the ball careens off the rim and is offensively snatched by the grasshopper grasp of Pau Gasol. With everyone focused on the Spaniard and that player with Italian roots, Artest shadows to his left and is open behind the three point line. It seems that nobody cares except for Gasol who serves Ron the butter. As Ron spots up a little awkwardly there's almost a collective gasp between players, fans, coaches and commentators. It seems that Ron spent a little too long in the freezer as the shot already looks cold. Now the game's yet to be iced as Ron's feet barely leave the ground while his shot barely makes the rim. With no goose neck for this lame duck attempt Ron backpedals a little awkwardly like a mummy. This time he won't be the daddy...yet.
TIMEOUT!
Everyone’s wondering what Ron was thinking. Ron was probably remembering at the start of the season when he said that if the Lakers don't win the championship everyone could blame it on him. Right then they were. Marv Albert can't believe it. There's exclamations made but no trademark 'Yes'! The Zen master is not calm. Everyone in the huddle is a little upset. Ron admits with an 'I know, I know' nod that the shot was ill-advised as Phil Jackson asks him why. Then when he looks away Artest pulls one of them awkward faces to himself. One of those 'aaaaakwaaaard' looks. As Ron looks a more than a little embarrassed Lamar Odom nudges Ron and reassures him that everything’s alright. That's that QB love right there. Still everyone's left wondering why the HELL Ron took that shot. Well I'm going to tell you. (Don't worry Ron I got you).
Former Laker come New Jersey Net Jordan Farmar puts it best, "Still, I like that Ron Artest shot". That shot was crucial and counted. It made its mark despite being an X instead of an O. Sometimes things do happen for a reason and I'm not talking about no patronizing, clichéd end of relationship excuse. Just like Jordan, Artest was never scared to take a crucial shot, make or miss and just like MJ said before to succeed he had to fail first.
Sometimes one ugly shot deserves another and so came the waning tenths of seconds of the same game. Now Kobe's rocking the pill (someone who should have the ball in his hands in these moments) but even his shot doesn't find rhyme or reason as the Mamba's out of rhythm. So off the iron and back into play the ball goes. Now it seems every player on the court and on the bench plus everyone in the arena and their momma ran for the loose ball like kids in the park chasing a soccer ball. It's Ron who times it right however in a hare and tortoise situation where Phoenix's Jason Richardson ends up resting under the tree, or this case the hoop. As Ron's Flintstone fast legs seem to escape him he hoists another awkward shot off balance that banks of the glass. This time however it's wet like victory champagne.
As Gold arms rise and purple, Phoenix hearts sink, red illuminates the backboard. The games a rap like 'My World' and Marv Albert can give his verbal thumbs up. Chick Hearn can look down with pride as the games finally in the fridge, with the series soon to be in the freezer. Now isn't redemption the realest story in the NBA? Ron redeemed himself in less than a few minutes and confirmed that he was the right show stopper for the show time. As the game came to a close Ron and Kobe ended up in each others face in a much different way to that time the year before, LA was back in control and someone great named Ariza was an afterthought.
Ron and LA both needed that shot. Not just for that game but the even bigger games that followed. You see even Kobe had to hit air balls before he hit the big time. You sometimes have to hit rock bottom in order to reach the top. The Lakers themselves had that after losing to Boston two years back. Now when it came to the closer of this years Boston/LA Finals, in Game 7, the time was Ron's. They say adversity builds character. Well Artest has been through his fair share of adversity and has a lot of character to boot. Ron, Ron ensured that LA saw double and was by far the MVP of the deciding game. His defense and complete play kept LA's throne guarded and made them the all round champs for another season. Artest even hit a similar crucial three pointer to the one that bricked against Phoenix to cement the win.
Phil Jackson may not have told Artest to shoot it (in his mind and Ron's) but his therapist probably did. It may have been ill-advised but in the press conference following the game to Ron it was "whatever". WAP! Obama would be proud. Change had come for a guy who was throwing punches at people the last time he sent the crowd in a frenzy. Number 37 really made game 7 a thriller, Michael would have been proud too, anyone, Tyson, Jordan, Jackson. Since then the champions and Artest have finally come together in perfect harmony like that autotune on the T-Pain remix Of Artest's track and now LA and Ron, Ron are looking for the same song this year. So the next time Gasol grabs a board and sees his frontcourt mate open like the Venice Beach courts on a playoff night he won't think twice about passing.
Game Over!

THROUGH THE WIRE: NEWS (09/30/10)
It seems nothing will stop Magic Point Guard Jason Williams who came back to stellar form after a brief, Jay-Z like semi-retirement. Well now J-Will will be stopped in the tracks a little bit as a knee surgery will keep him sidelined for around 4 weeks. Jason's had a lot of Andrew Bynum knee trouble over the last couple of weeks and re-injured himself during training camp. An MRI on the injury revealed loose cartilage in the knee but no tear, so the injury isn't as bad as it sounds. White Chocolate will hope this recovery will be a smooth process in order to make the start of the 2010 regular season. The Magic with Jameer Nelson and Chris Duhon however are stacked at the point position.
Phil Jackson may not be very happy that the Lakers are leaving training camp in El Segundo for London right now but Kobe Bryant has to be pleased with his European fan base. While Kobe looks for his third ring in a row this season he can bank on one three-peat. His number 24 jersey has been reported as the top seller in Europe for the third consecutive year. Taking a look at the sales from last year LeBron James and Dwyane Wade came in second and third respectively (maybe this will change this season). With all this love for Kobe surely he has to play in London and Barcelona. It seems that he'll get more than his 15 minutes of fame however...16 to be exact in limited action in front of his legion of European fans.
Hows this for a collaboration? Dr. Dre and LeBron James. One of the greatest ball players meets one of the greatest pioneers of hip-hop to produce a new line of headphones in the Beats By Dre range. SLAM have got the right idea it's 'Beats By LeBron' now. The headphones are launched in a new range of products and are designed for athletes. LeBron helped with the design of the 'Powerbeats' that debut with the 'Beatbox' (a new ipod dock (which will probably provide more 'bounce')and the 'iBeats' (for Apple's iPod, iPad and iPhone. There also is some high end 'Beats Pro' probably tailored for 'Business LeBron' and 'Just Beats' ideal for 'Kid LeBron'. The question is now will Kobe rock them before games? Because those 'Beats By Dre' sure look big on that shaved head of his. Check the commercial below and for all you commenters 1:15 is your LOL moment. TIM DAVID HARVEY.

THROUGH THE WIRE: NEWS (09/29/10)
Carmelo Anthony aint going nowhere! Well...for now that is. The production of the blockbuster trade between Denver and New Jersey has been cut. Denver seemed miles away from pulling the trigger on the move so New Jersey opted to take the deal off the table. While that infamous $65 mill extension from Denver remains collecting coffee rings. This seemed a done deal last week but after some stalling the Jersey boys were right to shore this deal. The Nets decided to concentrate on what they had which will make them more cohesive going into the season. Denver on the other hand now face the continuing, inconsistent uncertainty until something is signed. This wont make for great basketball in the mile high.
The NBA Rookie Of The Year runner up Stephen Curry does not come second in Golden States eyes. The Warriors have exercised their third-year contract option on this rising star for the 2011-12 campaign. The 7th pick in the Draft last year averaged a golden 17.5 points, 5.9 assists, 4.5 rebounds and 1.90 steals. This summers gold medalist still has a team option on his fourth year but its looking like the team are wanting Steph to stick around for some time. Good news for a team that just parted ways with Don Nelson. Now GSW just hope that Monta Ellis can get on the same page with this Sophomore sensation.
Dwight Howard's career has mirrored his idol Shaquille O'Neal's. He's an entertaining, happy go lucky big man. He dunks with his knees up. He's spearheading the strongest Orlando Magic team in years and he relishes the Superman tag. The only differences these guys seemed to have is on the court because now Dwight is even releasing an album. He joins Shaq, Kobe, Iverson, Ron Artest, Tony Parker and many more on store shelves. His debut CD is called 'Shoot For The Stars'. On the CD the history making stadium rim rocker will sing classic hits and arena anthems, 'Living On a Prayer' anyone? Dwight isn't doing this without some teammates however as he has talented kids singing backup vocals. The proceeds of Howard's foray into music will go to proceeds will go to benefit the BETA Center. BETA is an organisation that helps to provide children and parents with knowledge and support to help them build a strong family foundation. Sounds good to me. TIM DAVID HARVEY

THROUGH THE WIRE: NEWS (09/28/10)
It looks like the Knicks are going to have to order something fresh into the Big Apple as their all out of Curry right now. Their injury prone centre Eddy Curry will be out for around 4-6 weeks. The big man will try and round himself into shape near the start of the 2010/2011 regular season but as of right now he is suffering from a strained right hamstring. The powerful but problematic core of the Knicks centre's could really be a positive addition to this new talented Knicks squad despite the negative subtractions he has suffered. Curry has been out of favour health wise for the last three seasons as the Knicks have opened camp but coach Mike D'Antoni (loyal as ever) still has faith in his potential. Curry is in the last year of his contract and will want to heat up before he leaves teams with a bad aftertaste.
It appears that someone else has entered training camp like they've just left another camp. LA Clippers superstar guard Baron Davis has been told by his team that he is out of shape. New Clips coach Vinny Del Negro expressed his concerns at BD's conditioning and need to trim down. It has been rumored that Baron's weight was even at 260 pounds. I guess Davis may have to leave off the super sizes before he becomes Shaq sized. Still however Del Negro informed the press that Davis has been working real hard over the last month and is nowhere near 260 but still isn't where he needs to be weight wise. As soon as B. Diddy gets into better shape the Clippers will be in better condition to do some damage this season.
Another Davis and another guy who could use some time in the weight room has entered training camp with some issues. It seems that Boston's Big Baby, Glen Davis is throwing hit toys out the pram in regards to his role. Davis is a versatile guy who's worn many hats for the Celtics, Now he's far from crying again but still Glen would be much happier with a more solid role. Davis can shoot but he also honed his inside game a lot last season when (now retired) Rasheed Wallace spreaded the floor out. Now with the Boston Irish picking up two O'Neals (in Shaq and Jermaine) Davis is unsure where he'll fit. Wondering whether he'll still play centre or more 4 Glen Davis is looking for some clarity with coach Glenn 'Doc' Rivers. Davis has matured over the last few years with one of the Leagues oldest franchises and he's far from drooling like a baby if he doesn't get exactly what he wants. As long as he knows his role he's said he'll go out and be all Nike about it and just do it.
THROUGH THE WIRE: NEWS (09/27/10)
Training camp for NBA teams is now open! There are plenty of stories emerging after media day, but two of the biggest involve two of the best and most talked about players this summer. After all the negative talk about LeBron James this summer, his retort? He's going to let his game do the talking and he has stated he has "a lot of motivation" after all the back chatter this summer. Meanwhile James career co-star Carmelo Anthony (who has followed LeBron's footsteps in many ways) walked into the Denver Nuggets media day wearing a Nuggets jersey. Melo' is unsure of his future however. Whether he'll be donning a New Jersey jersey soon is still up in that Denver thin air. Still the fact that Anthony reported for camp in Denver is still a nugget of positive news for this team after the negativity surrounding this almost definite breakup.
With all these superstars looking to fly it's refreshing to see one franchise hero looking to return to his headquarters next season. Upcoming free agent Tony Parker has already expressed his loyalties to San Antonio before even having the chance to test the free agent waters in 2011. The tenacious French point guard not only knows that he has a wife worth sticking with in Eva Longoria Parker but a team worth committing too also. The reason this subject is even an issue in Parkers potential final year however is that he hopes the Spurs feel the same with the championship window closing for Parker, Duncan and Ginobili. Now the fact that these guys have already won three titles should keep talks for Tony open.
Now one player looking for a fresh start but with his current team is Washington Wizard Gilbert Arenas. This is following his March sentencing for felony gun possession for bringing a gun into his teams lockeroom after a gambling debt dispute with former teammate Jarvaris Crittenton. During media day the usual happy go lucky franchise player appeared serious, a demeanour which he'll want to translate on to the floor this season. Arenas however states that on court is the only place he does want to smile. Regardless it's going to be a joy to see Gilbert back on the floor next season so long as he keeps his troubles at bay and his talent in play.

TRAINING DAY
Notes From Camp Laker
BY TIM DAVID HARVEY
King James aint got nothing on the Lakers.
It's September 25th and were at the Toyota Sports Centre. There's cameras and recorders aplenty as champions in gold sport for photos in front of green screens. Yes once again media day has rolled round and the Lakers look as fresh as ever entering training camp, even if two of their stars aren't ready for a knees up and their coach is taking his shadow past 5 o'clock.
These Lakers look ready. Maybe it's because the target on the Lakers back has now shifted to the back of LeBron James and his Miami Heat or maybe it's because the Lakers are in that three-peat confidence, comfort zone. In the eyes of some critics the sun may now shine brighter in Miami than Los Angeles but these Lakers are out to prove that showtime is about to have it's run in Hollywood once again.
It starts with Kobe as always. Bryant looks confident coming off his knee surgery, smiling for he cameras with that Killer Jordan-esque grin whilst coolly flipping the Spalding behind his back.
Then we have Andrew Bynum, like Kobe and like himself last year and the year before Drew is recovering from knee surgery. Now although it seems like Bynum may as well go fishing with Greg Oden and Yao Ming for the time being Andrew is pivotal in the post for Los Angeles. The teams success may rest on those strong shoulders and weak knees but one things for sure no matter how much time number 17 spends on the chilling list, when he's on the court he's nothing but hot.
Also back in purple and gold are the usual suspects ready to do criminal damage to the rest of the league. Guilty as charged are Spanish bullfighter Pau Gasol ready to do even more damage in the paint. There's also Hollywood smooth, Lamar Odom fresh off winning Gold for his country and marrying one of the flyest girls in the city. Let's not forget Ron Artest who's now in his sophomore year with the Lakeshow after making good on his promise to be responsible for the teams Championship glory in his rookie Laker season. Also in the building are two guys who after long negotiations re-upped and kept California in bay. One Laker legend and saviour for the ages in Derek Fisher and one dunking, spark plugging, tenacious dynamo in Shannon Brown.
There's some new guys as well motoring in to the Toyota Sports centre. Defensive specialist Matt Barnes will look to put his domestic abuse allegations aside to give the Lakers homecourt advantage on defence. With Ron, Ron and the 'doberman' the Lakers now have a trio of the best perimeter defenders in the league. Now it's going to be hard for anyone to get through the door. The championship adorned Staples Centre is the Lakers house and they live in it. Also trying on his new Laker jersey is tough guard Steve Blake who may not look like a Basketball player, but with his skills, defence and sharp eye is a definite good look for LA.
As all the players answer questions and catch up one man looks at this group on this day, maybe for the last time. This could really be 'The Last Season' for Phil Jackson but believe this his team has found it's soul. The zen master is looking to believe in the quest for three one more time. He's already seen Red and raised him. Phil's got his game face on. He's even wearing the same beard he wore in those glorious Chicago Bulls days. Phil Jackson aint concerned with this media day stuff. He sarcastically told reporters that he'd missed them. Phil's not concerned about the preseason, he's already labelled it 'a bust'. What P-Jax is concerned about its what matters, the season ahead and when it unfolds he's not going to miss a thing.
Jordan Farmar and Adam Morrison may be gone and Trey Johnson, Anthony Roberson, Andrew Naymick and Russell Hicks may follow them soon but for the Lakers that will remain under contract it's all business. The Lakers may not have poached any of the top free agents this summer, swung any blockbuster deals or been involved in Carmelo Anthony talks but one thing is for certain. When it comes to the peak of the biggest stage, the Lakers will be the word.
This is chess, not checkers.

MORE PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT
What of the next chapter?
BY TIM DAVID HARVEY
I mean were talking about Allen Iverson.
Imagine if you would the following scene; where in an office. The location or the décor doesn't matter. What does matter is who's on the phone and the conversation taking place. Lets script it;
INT. NBA General Managers Office-Night.
A man whose looks middle aged and just a little out of playing shape is working the phone like he used to work the sidelines.
GM
(beat)
Alright coach how's the team looking?
COACH
(sighing)
Strong upfront but as for the backcourt I don't know.
GM
Alright let's get someone in, we can trim some of the fat if need be.
COACH
(upbeat)
Well how about that guy we talked about yesterday
GM
(defiant)
I don't think so, we already went over this.
COACH
(frustrated)
But...I mean were talking about Allen Iverson.
Surprising? Last season this may have been unheard of, last season definitely unheard, the seasons before undoubtedly. Today however it's common knowledge. It's unfortunately the new reputation of Allen Iverson.
I mean were talking about Allen Iverson.
I have a question that needs an answer. What the hell is going on?
Why is A.I. as wanted in this league as J.R? This is one of the greatest Basketball players were talking about. Were talking about a guy who is barely 6 foot and 150 pounds. A guy who despite this still changed the game. This isn't any other journeyman, ageing player or raw undrafted rookie were speaking on. I mean were talking about a guy that redefined a generation.
I mean were talking about Allen Iverson.
30 teams apparently don't want or need him. Sure Denver and Detroit have tried in the passed but what about the other 28? Especially one team who lives in the city of brotherly love. What happened with the Philadelphia 76ers? What cracked? How personal where those reasons for A.I.s departure? The Philly, Iverson reunion had the makings of NBA history. It had the roots of redemption so what was the tipping point to why things fell apart? We need more than the Philadelphia Inquirer to investigate this one. Sure when these two got back together things may have not come together as nicely as The Beatles but this is the same guy that walked the streets of Philadelphia like Bruce Springsteen. The same guy who is now asking the city of brotherly love not to turn their back on him like Neil Young. I mean this is the same guy that took the 76ers within two games of beating the Los Angeles Lakers and the 27 other teams back then to the one goal of meeting Larry O'Brien in all his championship gold. I mean were talking about a die hard, vicious competitor who had a hand to his ear, screaming with passionate victory at the First Union centre time after time.
I mean were talking about Allen Iverson.
So who's listening now? Who's talking? It seems that A.I. won't even be made in China. This all seems artificial with no intelligence. No Chinese democracy for Allen Iverson? It seems nobody has roses for this legend just guns. Why is this pioneer being shot down? He aint dead yet with Richard Pryor expletives. Sure he may not be as marketable as LeBron James but this guys done as much for the league as Kobe Bryant. This guys brought the NBA to millions worldwide today like Larry and Magic in the 80's with no tricks but now nobody is keeping it real with this genuine article. Nodody! This is no illusion. So what is it? Business? Personal? I mean this isn't just anybody. Where not just talking about another contract.
I mean were talking about Allen Iverson.
No 10 days, no agents this free. No training day invites, not even a sign and trade or waive. Is the league really saying goodbye? Or are the best teams simply too overstocked anyway? LA with enough stars, Miami with enough Heat, Orlando with enough Magic, Boston with enough beans. Now as for the teams that could use his help maybe Allen has the same problem as other out of work Americans looking for a job. Perhaps he's just too over qualified. Allen Iverson is yet to score big, (word to J-Live) he's just getting bounced around and like a Dwight Howard block off the glass, nothing is sticking like the 2008 Dunk Contest. I mean he's supposed to be the franchise player. This is the game that he goes out there and dies for. This is his practice. Lets DMX this for a second, this is not a f****** game. Where talking about something much deeper.
I mean were talking about Allen Iverson.
How many press conferences and hip-hop records do we have to listen to in order to recognize. Iverson’s work right now feels like prison and as Kanye put it 'just like Bad Boys street team' Iverson 'can't work the locks. RECOGNISE. Like J-Live puts it on DJ Jazz Jeff's 'Practice' he's been doing this for years, his rep is legit. Still it appears that Iverson is a square on a triangle hole, he doesn't fit, but why? Iverson aint no square, he's the coolest. A basketball geek who is as experienced and a relevant to this game like Jazzy Jeff is to his respectively, respect due. So when are we going to see 'The Return of The Magnificent'? When are we going to witness? Am sure Cleveland would want to bear witness to Iverson on the scene more than LeBron. Where however is the evidence?
Let's CSI this, from franchise players to undrafted rookies everyone’s getting called up while Iverson scans his finger down the list like the last schoolboy picked only to not see his name. This may have happened in school to Michael Jordan but it shouldn't now happen to a legend when he's established in this association. So why are the amateurs getting it right why this pro is getting it wrong? It's hard to see the answer to the question why this Basketball icon is getting the cut instead of making it but believe me this is not a wrap. I mean we aren't talking about guys who fill up the roster spots that count up from 15. We aren't talking about some guy whose jersey may as well not be printed during the preseason. Were talking about someone whose jersey is still selling but shouldn't be a throwback. Were talking about someone who's spawned more hardwood classics than Mitchell & Ness.
I mean were talking about Allen Iverson.
Sure this guys volatile, a bit of a problem child to say the least but there's much worse out there. Even Steph Marbury took his down South career up a notch north in the Far East. Despite all the negative headlines off court however Iverson has always let his game do the talking on court. Allen Iverson unlike a pair of Air Force 1's has kept the on court and off court separate. You can't rock what Allen does on the floor with jeans. Iverson takes it on the chin in the trenches of both the tainted section of the media and the painted area under the basket. Plus through all the hits his Nina Simone, misunderstood personality and his frail, small frame take he still picks himself up at 35 off the floor and off the wall like MJ in the early days. So why is this same guy being backed down? This corn row rocking guard is not Latrell Sprewell he's not just after the money, he's after the love of the game.
So LA Laker or LA Clipper this legend could be more of an asset than the liabilities he's been left with. Sure he may not like to come off the bench or his financial demands may be too high (he's still not rocking Sprewell’s) but it's time to pay him and play him. This groundbreaking talent should be able to break in those new Reeboks on the hardwood but he shouldn't be played.
You know what I mean. Allen Eazil Iverson is the real deal and no matter what is said and done at the end of the day and at the end of a game you need a guy who wants to take the last shot and a guy who knows how to take that shot. You need a guy that loves to take this winning shot and this is another reason why Iverson loves this game. This is his practice. If those in power think it's not than maybe it's time these GM's and coaches went back to the drawing board because there ready for a lot but not the big game. Not the game that Iverson goes out there and dies for.
I mean were talking about Allen Iverson.

REVIEW: JUST WRIGHT
(Originally Published on 'FILMS FOR FRIDAY' http://whatfilmsareoutthisweekend.blogspot.com/2010/09/review-just-wright.html)
3/5
PG, 100 Minutes. Starring Queen Latifah, Common, Paula Patton, James Pickens Jr, Phylicia Rashad, Pam Grier, Laz Alonso, Mehcad Brooks, Michael Landes, Dwight Howard, Dwyane Wade, Rashard Lewis. Director: Sanaa Hamri
Two Hip-Hop legends act 'Wright'.
Queen Latifah and Common have made a name for themselves in music and movies over the years. Latifah became one of the first female rap superstars with albums like 'All Hail The Queen' in the 80's and she's been acting for decades. Common has cemented his reputation as one of the best socially conscious rappers around today with albums like 'Be' and 'Finding Forever'. He has also forged himself a decent film career over the last couple of years with credits including 'American Gangster', 'Terminator Salvation' and much more. After years of hard work in both fields the Queen and the man with Common Sense take the lead in a romantic comedy that is 'Forget Paris' meets 'Love & Basketball'.
Back when Common was younger he used to be the kid that mopped up sweat at Chicago Bulls games well in 'Just Wright' Common gets even closer to the stars, living (at least while filming) every rappers dream of becoming an NBA player. Common even holds his own as Scott McKnight even if it does look like he had a little 'assist' on those dunks. This really does seem like a dream world however as the New Jersey Nets in this movie are a contender. Someone should call owner Jay-Z because truthfully he'd like a baller like Common Sense.
So McKnight is the talk of New York, New Jersey and the NBA. Every player wants to play like him and every woman wants to play with him including Latifah's physical therapist Deborah Wright and her cousin played by Mrs. Robin Thicke, Paula Patton (who really looks and sounds like she could be related to Alicia Keys). After a game Latifah and Common hit it off in a petrol station, but after a party it's Patton who makes her mark on the ballplayer and they start a relationship. Months later McKnight goes down with a potentially career ending knee injury and some of the love for this All-Star becomes all-sour and turns to doubt. After Patton has her worries and concerns (especially concerning McKnights 'amazing' new personal trainer, where she doesn't want amazing to happen) she asks for her cousins to step in and from there it seems that Wright was just what the doctor ordered.
This film is as sharp as these rappers skills on the microphone. The movie catches New York in summer as perfectly as 'Hitch' did further making this film a feel good affair of sorts. It looks as cool as a behind the back pass and the supporting cast are a slam dunk. From 'Greys Anatomy' favourite James Pickens Jr to Phylicia Rashad aka Clair Huxtable (you've gotta love that 'Cosby Show' nostalgia) to Pam Grier (It looks like it's been a long time since 'Foxy Brown'). There are even great cameo appearances from a host of NBA players including the made for camera Dwight Howard and Miami Heat leading man Dwyane Wade. The stars of the NBA prove they can read lines as good as they can read plays and they also help ensure the basketball action is as authentic as it's ever been on screen (even if most of the other players are extras with questionable names like 'Taller'). Lil Bow Wows performance in 'Like Mike' has to bow down to the exceptional performance of fellow MC Common who shows he can read screens as good as he can read lines and write rhymes. Let's not forget the star of this show Queen Latifah however who further expands her impressive filmography further than her discography. Overall this film is feel good, funny, exciting, romantic and a winner complete with a soundtrack that hits the high score. 'Just Wright' lives up to it's name it goes down like the third bowl of porridge. A hot movie that makes a steal off a Friday night. TIM DAVID HARVEY

WHOA NELLY! It looks like one of the most charismatic and most successful NBA coaches of all time might take his final walk out the tunnel this year. 70 year old Don Nelson is expected to part ways with the Golden State Warriors on Monday. The coach with the most W's in the win column of NBA history (with 1,335) has manned the helm for the Milwaukee Bucks, the Golden State Warriors (twice), the New York Knicks and the Dallas Mavericks. He may have the most wins in NBA history but he has never coached a team to the championships. He has however won five championships as a player when he was a sixth man with the Boston Celtics. Although it's expected that he will no longer run Oak town it is not certain whether that means Nellie's coaching days are over or not. Let's hope not as Don Nelson is a rare breed and has provided us with some of the best and most entertaining moments in NBA history. Including the time he wore a clown nose after his 'Hack-a-Shaq' strategy (which he coined) didn't pay off. Here's hoping Nelson still wants to be part of the circus.
The talks between New Jersey and Denver Nuggets over Carmelo Anthony appear to be speaking up. Although the rumours are whirling round the mill everything is a little bit hush, hush, but the smoke is evidently here so expect some fire. There are hints at a possible multi-team deal involving the Utah Jazz and Charlotte Bobcats with Charlotte clawing Devin Harris in this deal, the Jazz sounding French with Boris Diaw and the Nuggets expanding their arsenal with AK-47 Andrei Kirilenko. The only problem for New Jersey is that Denver want Jersey's number 3 rookie Derrick Favours who has Duncan and Garnett type potential. Even so if this deal goes down the Nets won't have to look to the Hollywood or the fictional Scott McKnight for a superstar who is 'Just Wright'. Jay-Z may have his 'Brooklyn Bomber' after all.
The NBA is planning a crack down this season involving referee's. No this is not a further development in the referee problem in the league but more a license for these guys to blow the whistle on players who use 'overt' gestures. It appears the association is tired of players complaining and throwing their toys out the pram. Well not on their court. The NBA is getting all Coach Carter in their 'respect for the game'. More T's will be handed for fists thrown in anger in hope that this behaviour is reduced. Am sure somewhere Rasheed Wallace is content that he made the right decision this summer.

The Los Angeles are about to make a trip across Europe to start their preseason in London and Barcelona. As they look to make a strong start to their campaign for their third ring they will have to do this while missing some deliveries in the post. Andrew Bynum (who seems to share the same knees as Greg Oden) will start his preseason on the injured list. The talented centre appears to be in and out of rehab more times than Amy Winehouse. The Lakers will miss their true centre who despite being young, injured prone and playing on a team full of franchise players is becoming a star himself in Hollywood. The Lakers open training camp on Saturday and while Bynum will be there more than in spirit he won't be sprinting anytime soon. Bynum postponed knee surgery to help his team win the championship last season and as soon as he recovers he will hope he can do this again this season.
Dallas have added another Maverick to their cattle roping in free-agent Steve Novak. The 6-foot-10 forward just finished his 2 year contract with the Los Angeles Clippers and in his career has also logged a couple of years with the Houston Rockets. Novak who played in the Final Four in 2003 with Marquette and Dwyane Wade will be effective off the bench coming in with career averages of 4.1 points and 1.1 rebounds. The New York Knicks have also planted more growing talent in their Garden acquiring 6-foot-9 forward Shawne Williams. Again another strong player off the bench. During his time with Indiana and Dallas this 17Th pick of the 2006 draft has spark plugged career averages of 5.2 points, 2.4 rebounds. There really is some electricity coming out of Madison Square Garden now.
Back in this years playoffs he may have looked like he was throwing up at the sight of Kobe Bryant torching his Suns but one things for sure Phoenix aren't sick of their head coach Alvin Gentry. The Phoenix Suns have extended the coach's tenure through the 2012-13 season. Phoenix have extended the previous contract option they exercised through 2011-12 by a year. Gentry has helped rise Phoenix from the ashes of Mike D'Antoni's departure and Terry Porters brief stint by heating them up to third best in the West last season with a 54-28 record. Gentrys complete record with the Suns is 72-41 which flames at a 46-12 mark while the team have homecourt advantage. The Suns have also burnt the league in scoring for the last two seasons were they have shined the brightest. It's hoped that with Gentry the Suns can see the light at the end of the playoff tunnel.

After Javaris Crittenton's infamous gun incident with former Washington Wizards team mate Gilbert Arenas last season left both players reputations tarnished it appears the Charlotte Bobcats are prepared to give Javaris another shot (no pun intended). There are no guarantees for Crittenton as this is a limited contract that he has been offered in invitation to Charlotte's training camp. The point guard last season pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor offence after bringing a gun into the Wizards lockeroom (and to think Washington had fought so hard to shed the 'Washington Bullets' name) and he received probation and a 38 game ban to add insult to his suit and tie inducing ankle injury. The former Los Angeles Laker backup will hope his strong backup play will earn him a chance again to play in the NBA.
It seems that there will be no Chinese democracy for Allen Iverson which just leaves the legend of the NBA with more questions ( pun intended). The former scoring champ and MVP's talks with CBA side Foshan Liyuan reached stalemate as A.I.s financial demands were too high. Perhaps Foshan thought Iverson was too old at 35 for such a high price tag or maybe they thought that the Chinese Basketball Association already had enough flashy, volatile former NBA guards with Stephon Marbury Far East. Either way the next chapter of Iverson's career that Starbury was so excited to tweet about has yet to be written. With age and interest from NBA teams not on Iversons side let's hope somebody can get on the same page with him before they close the book on one of the greatest, most unique players basketball has ever seen.
NBA Players carry a lot on their shoulders, pressure, fame, egos (no offence) but it now appears that they'll carry less weight. Adidas who have been the NBA's offical uniform supplier for many years now have brought many changes to the NBA kits but now they take it a step further. At an event in New York City's NBA store featuring guys like Dwight Howard and Jordan Famar Adidas unveil NBA Revolution 30, the lightest and most technologically advanced NBA uniforms ever. These uniforms will be introduced to all 30 teams in the league that will be wearing them this upcoming season. Compared to previous uniforms these will be 30 percent lighter and will dry twice as fast which will ensure the NBA athletes are kept cooler, drier and more comfortable when there playing. These measures will help enhance the performance of NBA stars. Sounds like a welcome improvement. No sweat. These jerseys will have a more skin tight look taking away the previous baggy uniform look (I blame Kanye). I'm sure the shorts will still be more Allen Iverson than John Stockton however and some athletes in this league are so big and built that they'll be able to carry this shrink rap look off. Dwight Howard will carry this look off for one but as for Kevin Martin I'm not so sure.

The departure of LeBron James rocked Cleveland for sure. Many former lovers of the King are now denouncing his throne with hate. James signing with Miami almost went South for Mo Williams too. The guard almost said 'no mo' to Basketball after the team he signed with was essentially broken up. Mo Williams has been reported by Yahoo as saying that he was so depressed by LeBron's departure that he almost retired from Basketball altogether. Now were all glad 'almost' was the appropriate phrase as it's guys like Mo Williams that make the league that much better. Mo stated that his loss of love came with the game, let's hope his play isn't too effected next season as the Cavs need him now more than ever. I guess with his reported depression and stress it seems that LeBron's leaving stirred up all sorts of feelings in Ohio. Tomorrow is another season however, lets see how it all plays out.
The Hornets roster is coming into shape more this season as they have come to agreements with free-agents Joe Alexander and Pops Mensah-Bonsu. Alexander has locked up his spot, while New Orleans expect Mensah-Bonsu to be a part of the Training Camp roster. Joe Alexander was a top ten draft pick (a Yoko Ono number 8 to be specific) in 2008 out of West Virginia. He played for the Milwaukee Bucks but then this year played with the D-League’s Fort Wayne Mad Ants and then the Chicago Bulls. Talented forward Mensah-Bonsu has size and athleticism and is a journeyman of this league despite only ever playing 54 NBA games. Pops has brought home the bacon for the Dallas Mavericks, the Toronto Raptors, the San Antonio Spurs and the Houston Rockets. The British player has also spent time playing overseas. These are two good pickups for NO who seem to consistently get younger and more talented each year.
It appears that the Sacramento Kings are losing some of their royalties so to speak. The legendary Arco Arena where they play will soon be just left as well...'The Arena' we guess. The oil company Arco have been with the Californian kings and the legendary arena for a quarter of a century but now they can not mine in Sacramento any longer. In these tough economic times for the cellar dwelling, former powerhouse Sacto it will prove hard for them to find a replacement sponsor. The two parties do have one more season left together before this 25 year reign ends however. It will be a shame that this legendary arena will now lose its synonymous name but never fear the cowbells will still ring for the kings. Perhaps the 'More Cowbell Arena' could be a adequate new name.

There has been months of speculation and most likely months more will follow but the Carmelo Anthony drama of the offseason has made some 'significant' developments this weekend. It appears that the Nuggets will entertain trade offers for the unhappy star. Now Melo may be fishing for a team and the Nuggets may agree to set a line but their not about to dangle their prize catch for just anyone to hook. Plus the Nuggets have some bait for Anthony with their contract extension that still hasn't been cast off. This trade seems almost seems cocked and ready but before the Nuggets pull the trigger they will want to make sure their loaded enough to bite the bullet. So soon Carmelo may be a single man seeking the perfect partner for a championship while Denver look for possible suitors for young talent, draft picks and salary cap relief.
Chicago Bulls star Joakim Noah (who has been linked in a potential trade with Anthony) has attracted more attention from teams other than the Denver Nuggets. It has been reported that Noah has been turning teams down two by two. Team USA, Cameroon and Sweden all came with a pitch towards Joakim in hopes that he would suit up to play for them internationally but Noah respectfully declined. The enigmatic talent has made the decision that in international competition he will say Au Revoir to other nations in favour for playing for France. Noah See's it as his "dream" to play for France and that it will make his family "proud". Joakim, who is also sponsored by French company Le Coq Sportif will be a valued and vital addition to a Basketball developing nations team.
Multi-talented Point Guard, movie producer and double (team) threat Baron Davis has been nominated for an Emmy. The stars film 'Crips and Bloods: Made in America' is up for the award of Best Documentary. Baron produced the film via his compnay Verso Entertainment about America's two most notorious gangs in order to show all sides of this culture so the audience can make up their own mind. The film that was first released in 2008 is narrated by Academy Award winner Forrest Whitaker and Baron believes that this problem doesnt just effect the ghettos but America as a whole. He says, "We all need to make a concerted effort to attack the problem, really do something as a country, as a nation, to support and restructure the way things are," and profoundly puts it that, "We have to build roads to success, not roads to the penitentiary." We wish Baron all the best for the Emmy's as he deserves the recognition for his hard work and vision in two fields. Never one to shy away from a task, Baron however will be unable to make the awards in New York for his movie magic as he'll be in Hollywood working, but this time it'll be with the Los Angeles Clippers at training camp for this years NBA season. You know he's pretty good at making magic on the court too.

EYE ON THE STORM
After the thunder comes a storm.
BY TIM DAVID HARVEY
Let’s take it back to 2008 for a moment. The Supersonics franchise channel Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier and say ‘Goodnight Seattle’ heading off to Oklahoma City. This left nobody listening to Basketball in Seattle but believe me everyone should be now. Even though Kevin Durant had helped make everybody forget about the Sonics with the still relatively new Thunder Basketball purists should still look out for the Storm.
The Storm being Seattle’s premier Basketball franchise. A franchise that still plays in the Supersonics former KeyArena and a franchise that plays in the WNBA. A league that now delivers, as well as ‘Expects great’ but also a league that goes about as unheard of as those old ‘Save Our Sonics’ pleas.
Still when a storm comes you can’t stop the rain and when it rains in Seattle it pours. This weekend the Storm became the WNBA champions for the second time and to top that off their leader Lauren Jackson became league MVP this year, for the third time in her career. As the Storm blew out Atlanta banners in the crowd read, 'Not in our house'. The key doesn't fit for the Sonics anymore, the locks have changed. It's the Storms house now.
The Storm showered nightmares on the Atlanta Dream in this years finals. Sweeping them and putting them to bed in 3 games. Now that’s headline making, even if where Carmelo will end up dominates more of the broadsheets. Between all the hear say and gossip however real ball speaks for itself and with the Storm they cut, print and wrap it all up right before your eyes. It’s just a shame these days you’d need a paperboy in a sandwich board to read all about it.
Still purists can see and believe when they look into the eye of the storm. They see whet began as an expansion team in 2000 become a team that is not only a playoff regular but a two time champion in eight years. They see a team that has done so much and believe it can do more.
Stormwatchers, chases and followers that look into the eye of their team can see it is led by a player like no other in Lauren Jackson. A most valuable player to her team, league and country. An Australian who makes her nation as proud as Andrew Bogut does. A player that’s among the best in basketball today, men or women, period. A player you don’t want to underestimate before you get Lo-Jacked. A winner and a champion.
Opponents that dare look in the eye of the storm will have a deadeye staring right back at them. Observe a sharp three point shooter in green and white, knocking down treys in the corner with ‘Bird’ embroiled across their vest. This shooter however doesn’t come with a French Lick but this shooter is more than just ‘another’ bird. This deadeye is Sue Bird and if opponents don’t keep an eye on her, they may as well stare in the face of defeat.
There’s more to this Seattle Storm than meets the eye however. It’s teams that win championships and Seattle boasts an international, diverse and versatile roster. Players that thread the needle and space the floor. Players you can bank on like Swin Cash. Girls you can have faith in like Abby Bishop. Ladies that can play on either ends of the floor in parallel currents, AC/DC just like their theme song leaving their opponents ‘Thunderstruck’. Even after their brother ran off to Oklahoma in Sonic speed the Storm still stand alone proud, an only child to the city, carrying and making Seattle proud.
Seattle is famous for grunge music and bands like Pretty Girls Make Graves, but here it appears that real women make great basketball players. Maybe Pearl Jam (we see you Mookie Blaylock) should name their next album after the Storm. The city of Seattle needn’t fish for an NBA franchise, they’ve got a perfectly good team in the WNBA. A team that right now is the best in its league. Sure Sparks may fly and Shock and Mercury may rise but the Storm isn’t over now. Dreams may reach as high as the Sun, Sky and Stars but nothing is as high as the cloud the Storm sits upon. Up high above Liberty, Mystic, Lynk and the strongest Fever. Or in other words, it doesn’t matter if you’re from Los Angeles, Tulsa, Phoenix, Atlanta, Connecticut, Chicago, San Antonio, New York, Washington, Minnesota or Indiana. In the WNBA, 12 for 12 nothing right now goes to town with Seattle.
The city of Seattle weathered the storm of the Supersonics technically giving their roster away to Oklahoma and the Thunder and shone through the darkest cloud with a new team, better than ever. So the next time you see a gloomy cloud on the horizon out West and feel like there’s nothing to do, don’t just put up an umbrella, really take in the storm because with a team like Seattle you may have just saved your rainy day. Now tell me again what the WNBA told you to expect?

THROUGH THE WIRE: NEWS (09/17/10)
Although never one in need of losing a few pounds San Antonio Spurs superstar Tim Duncan has slimmed down for this season. Last season Duncan was 15 pounds lighter and it seems again this summer he really is moving weight like Oprah (We see you Jay-Z). After 14 seasons deep in the L it appears the robot is upgrading and re-tooling all the time. Now it seems the T-bot has shifted some extra components without losing any metal. San An coach Gregg Popovich describes Tim as slim and trim and is looking forward to still being in the title hunt because write them off or not the Spurs are still clicking. The rest of the Western Conference better look out, what's before there eyes aint always San Antonio black and white. Both Duncan and his team are far from old and far from being done. It appears all Duncan needs now is a decent meal.
There's been speculation and talk for months but still Carmelo Anthony remains a Nugget and still he wants out. Right now the winds have changed in Chicago as they aren't prepared to lose the talented Joakim Noah in order to get Melo (and what a lockeroom presence they'd lose too. The problem with any team is not only finding the talent and youth to match Anthony but the teams willing to give up that talent too. A multi-team blockbuster may be on the cards and one team looking to play their hand and part is the New Jersey Nets. Melo would be a great poster boy for a rebuilding Nets especially if they move to Brooklyn. Carmelo could be the new franchise they never had in LeBron (we see you again Jay). Also if Denver got Devin Harris in return they'd receive good insurance in replacing Anthony but with Chauncey Billups they'd crowd their backcourt. The 76ers look like another option even for a multi- deal with the Nets. Now if Andre Iguodala trades places with Anthony he may save Denver money but he won't be the franchise guy that Carmelo is (but he is still a star, top-flight guy in more ways than one). Either way if the Nuggets are going to lose Anthony one way or another and if this summers anything to go by they don't want to lose him like a Bosh or LeBron and get nothing in return.
It seems sometimes that 'beef' in the NBA is as common as it is in hip-hop. Two guys however are looking to become vegetarians and squash their feud. Golden State Warriors talented guard duo of Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis are trying to get on the same page this season after battling to get on the same court last season. Monta Ellis broke out for Golden State years back and after Baron Davis' departure was given the torch to the team, however after an injury last year and the rise of Stephen Curry Monta had to temporarily pass it over. Now these guys are both healthy these Warriors need to stop fighting and realise if they stand side to side in battle they can conquer the Western Conference. Sure their both similar players, with similar games but so were Jordan and Pippen. Now these two may be a long way from those Chi-town legends but they could still form one of the best duos in the NBA and bring glory back to Oak -town.
